Pirates of the Burning Sea iSO The age of sail is a popular story setting, thanks to its romantic aspects. It's an era when ships moved about by the power of the wind, rather than loud, ugly machinery, and heroes swashbuckled their way around using skill and charm. Or, at least, that's how popular culture likes to remember it. Still, there's something to be said for a pirate-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game when so many of its competitors veer toward the familiar fantasy route. That brings us to Pirates of the Burning Sea, a game that's been in development for a number of years now. But with the launch finally in sight next month, preparations are coming to a frenzied head, and developer Flying Lab Software has been busy conducting beta tests. We dived into the test recently ourselves, with some of the developers tagging along to show off some of the game's cool features, like naval combat. Burning Sea is a bit like a massively multiplayer online role-player version of single-player games like Sid Meier's Pirates! and Port Royale. Many of the concepts in Burning Sea make it similar to those games, only expanded to allow for hundreds or even thousands of players to inhabit the same virtual world at the same time. You create a character and explore port towns and their various structures, like taverns, for missions. Then, you can embark on the open sea in a ship that you can customize with various upgrades. As you ply the waters of the Caribbean, you can sail from town to town or engage in naval battles, and you can sword-fight on land or on the decks of a ship.
THQ and Iron Lore embraced the violent side of Greek mythology with last year's Titan Quest, a hack-and-slash role-playing game that charged you, as an anonymous Greek hero, with the task of combating the treacherous elder gods who had escaped their Olympian prison. While it was rife with mythological creatures and locales, it took more than a few cues from Diablo, the mother of all hack-and-slash RPGs. There are far worse games you could choose to crib from, but despite the game's sharp presentation, there were certain aspects of Titan Quest that felt unnecessarily antiquated. Titan Quest: Immortal Throne is an expansion pack that features an all-new high-level campaign with plenty of fresh gear, and it's a no-brainer for fans of the original. It also addresses some of the more cumbersome aspects of the original Titan Quest, simultaneously making that game more appealing to newcomers.

Command & Conquer Generals - Zero Hour hough it wasn't the first game of its type, Command & Conquer became synonymous with real-time strategy gaming when the very first game in the series was released in 1995. Along with Blizzard's Warcraft II, Command & Conquer helped build the foundation for one of PC gaming's most beloved genres, defining many of the real-time strategy conventions that are used today. And though Command & Conquer has seen its highs and lows over the years, the series' quirky, politically incorrect, comic-book-like take on modern warfare has remained intact all throughout, and it is upheld in the latest entry in the series, Command & Conquer: Generals. More importantly, Generals is easily one of the best Command & Conquer games yet, with the impressive visuals and highly refined and accessible gameplay that have come to characterize the best entries in this genre. Die-hard fans of Command & Conquer may lament a few of the departures Generals makes from the series' roots, and the game does have a few rough edges, but Generals is still one of the best real-time strategy games around.
